It can be a daunting task to decide on going to marriage counseling. Whether the two of you as a couple mutually decided that marriage counseling was a good idea or it was brought up by one spouse, going to the first session can be difficult as you don’t know what to expect. Here at Emery Counseling, your Fort Collins marriage counselor, we want to give you some tips on what you can expect the first time you come to see us so that some of your fears can be eased.
Know that we are not here to take sides. We’re here to objectively help you find ways to better and more effectively communicate in your relationship so that you can build understanding and satisfaction within the relationship. You can expect us to ask basic questions about the history of your relationship such as marital status, how long have you been in the relationship or how you met. You can also expect us to ask you and your spouse what brought you to couples therapy. Your initial appointment will focus on learning about who you are as individuals and also as a couple, and this can be considered the assessment phase of counseling.
When we first start marriage counseling, we ask for you to be patient. There is not an instant cure to your relationship problems. Couples come in to us at many different stages of their relationship and the stage at which you two are in can affect the course of counseling and what you want to accomplish.
